Both sit in Crudwell, a few steps apart, and both come with the same warm welcome. The difference is really about how much you want looking after. A hotel room means breakfast cooked for you and someone on reception; Mayfield Cottage means your own front door, a kitchen and a washing machine. Here’s how the two compare so you can pick the one that fits the trip.

Mayfield Cottage, if you’d rather have your own space
The cottage sits right next door to the hotel, with two ground floor bedrooms: a king size master with its own 55-inch flat screen smart TV and a twin that can be zipped together into a Superking if you’d prefer. That flexibility makes it work equally well for two couples travelling together or for a family. Everything being on the ground floor is worth knowing if stairs are a consideration.
The kitchen is fully equipped, and there’s a sitting and dining area with a 55 inch smart TV. The dishwasher and washing machine are the details that matter on a longer stay, particularly with children or a muddy dog after a Cotswolds walk. Outside there’s an enclosed courtyard, and parking is off-road and yours.
It suits longer stays, family visits, dog friendly breaks and anyone who simply likes their own front door. Self-catering rates are set separately from the hotel room offers, and recent listings have included two and three night stays from £135 a night. Staying self-catering doesn’t mean cooking every night, either. You’re very welcome to come over to the hotel for breakfast, “Brunch ‘n’ Lunch” or dinner at Asha’s, which is rather the best of both.
A room at Pettifers, if you’d rather be looked after
There’s a good spread of rooms. Classic Doubles are the mainstay, and Large Double or Twin rooms give you more space with a choice of super king or twin beds, on either the gardenside or in the courtyard buildings. Two ground floor courtyard rooms are set up for accessibility (levels1 & 2), and there are three single rooms, one of them on the ground floor in the main hotel, which is genuinely useful if you’re travelling alone and would rather not pay a double rate.
For families, the Classic Family Rooms have a double and a single, and the Large Family Room in the courtyard building has a double and two singles. Both are dog friendly.
Every room comes with free WiFi, a flat screen TV with Freeview, Faith in Nature toiletries, Rington’s tea and coffee with cookies, a hairdryer and a fan. The full list of rooms, with what sits where, is on our accommodation page.
The real argument for a room is breakfast. Our Full Cotswolds breakfast has picked up a Local Hero award, and it’s served from 7.30am to 9.30am Monday to Friday and from 8am to 10am at weekends. Not having to think about the first meal of the day is worth a lot on a short break.
What you get either way
Asha Indian Kitchen is open daily from 5pm to 9pm, with house specialities including the Achari Masala, Shashlik Masala and Plazza, all shaped by Chef Parvez. Non-residents book in too, so it’s worth reserving a table whichever way you’re staying. There’s a full bar alongside it, and Italian espresso in the lounge, bar and snug. If you’re here for a night or two, want breakfast made for you and don’t fancy shopping, take a room. If you’re staying longer, travelling as a family or a pair of couples, bringing a dog, or you just like having a kitchen and a door of your own, book the cottage.
